| How
many children do you have living at ACCH, and what are their
ages? |
We are licensed for 30 children. However,
we are using our 3rd cottage as a relief cottage. As a result,
we have a practical capacity of 20 children. Our goal is to
open our relief cottage for full-time care. The children living
on our campus typically are school age, 6 to 18 years old
(houseparent's children are excluded from the age range). |
| |
| How
long have you been in operation? |
Albuquerque Christian Children's Home
began caring for children in 1970 at the present location. |
| |
| Are
the children orphans? Where do they come from? |
Most of our children in residence are
from homes in crisis, not orphans. The vast majority of our
children at ACCH are "orphaned by the living" -
that is, they are without a home due to abuse, neglect and/or
abandonment by their parent(s) or guardian. In these situations,
the children have been removed from their home by a family
member or the legal system and placed at ACCH. |
| |
| Do
you have all girls or boys and do the children live in a house
or dormitory? |
We have both boys and girls living at
ACCH. Our children live in a family-style home, usually with
a married couple as houseparents. These 4000+ square feet
homes are called cottages and house up to 10 children each.
There is an apartment for the houseparents, bedrooms with
attached bathrooms, a spacious kitchen, living room and recreation/study
area provided with each cottage. |
| |
| How
long can children stay at ACCH? Are the children allowed to
stay after high school and go to college? |
The goal of ACCH for each child is permanency
placement. When possible, the child returns to the family.
The average child stays 18 months; however the stay varies
depending on the birth family's ability to become a stable
unit capable of caring for the child. Some children continue
to be cared for by ACCH following high school. Several of
our children have attended college or technical schools. We
strive to provide them with self-sufficient adult life skills. |
| |
| Do
the children attend your own school or church? |
They attend the Albuquerque Public Schools.
The children attend a local congregation with their houseparents.
|
| |
| Are
your children adoptable? |
| No, our children are not adoptable. We strive to reunite the
children with their families. |
| |
| Do
you take violent children? |
ACCH is not staffed or equipped to care
for children with advanced behavior problems. Violence in
any of our facilities is not tolerated and will result in
imediate out-placement from our campus |
| |
| Do
you have a Volunteer Program? |
Absolutely! There are many ways to volunteer
at ACCH! You can volunteer to help at a cottage, the office,
special events, our thrift store and in many other ways. Volunteers
are very important to our ministry for children. Volunteer
opportunities allow you, your church, your business or civic
group to help at-risk children, who have been neglected or
abused, make a new start in their lives. Your donation or
volunteer work will help change the life of a child and maybe
your own. |
